The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is Australia’s regulatory authority for therapeutic goods such as medicines, medical devices, and diagnostic tests.
As part of the Department of Health, the TGA regulates the quality, supply and advertising of medicines, pathology devices, medical devices, blood products and most other therapeutics.
Supplements may be regulated as either a food or a medicine in Australia, depending on whether it meets the requirements outlined in the Food Standards Code, or the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 . the Therapeutic Goods Regulations 1990, or a ministerial order, must be approved by the TGA and registered in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.
The TGA provides a food-medicine interface guidance tool to help in determining whether a product is a medicine or a food.
